We’re hiring a Participant Support Worker

Participant Support Worker

As a Participant Support Worker, you will work directly with individuals at our drop-in centre who are experiencing poverty, addictions, mental illness, homelessness and/or housing precarity.

Description:

  • Work directly with individuals at SMUN Centre providing services for individuals experiencing homelessness
  • Refer clients to SMUN’s Housing Team or Employment Programs
  • Connect clients to shelter, treatment programs, and housing programs
  • Connect clients to ID clinics, income tax clients, banking, benefits and income assistance (e.g. OW, ODSP, OAS, GIS, etc.) as required
  • Applications to Niagara Regional Housing
  • Connect individuals to community supports, including housing related benefits, healthcare, mental health/ addiction supports
  • Maintain fidelity to guidelines set by the agency and the Niagara Region
  • Provide referrals to appropriate community resources and  follow up to build effective  wrap around support system
  • Work in accordance with agency philosophy of service and specific program goals

The successful candidate is a confident, non-judgmental, energetic, and persistent team player who has:

  • Experience or education in a related field is an asset
  • Knowledge of or lived experience with mental health and addiction issues
  • Understanding of client focused and directed service
  • Solid knowledge about community resources, harm reduction, housing and income benefits
  • Training in de-escalation, non-violent crisis intervention, and suicide prevention an asset
  • Demonstrated creative problem solving ability
  • Experience in social services or related field
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ease with a diverse population
  • Team player
  • Willingness to go the extra mile.

Additional Requirements: A vulnerable persons’ police clearance certificate will be requested after the job offer.

Location: St. Catharines

Hours:  70 hours over two-week period, some evenings and weekends may be required  

Start Date:  As soon as possible

Contract Term: December 31, 2019

Starting salary: TBD
