Stock up on shampoo and toothpaste: Stuff the Truck is returning to Fairview Mall

Posted Sep 19th, 2024

Niagara’s Mobile Closet has a goal to fill a truck with personal hygiene products to help people in need.

Lynn McIntyre, Niagara’s Mobile Closet program co-ordinator said the Stuff the Truck event helps to raise money and amass items hard to come by for the service, operated under the Start Me Up Niagara umbrella, which assists upwards of 5,000 people each year across Niagara.

“It would be extremely costly to go out there and purchase all the items ourselves,” she said.

“We depend on the community a fair amount, for all our donations. We are never disappointed, the community has such great heart.”

The event will be held at Fairview Mall in St. Catharines on Sunday, Sept. 22, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shampoo, feminine hygiene products, toilet paper, deodorant, sunscreen and body wash are among many essential items that will be collected.

McIntyre said there will be a free barbecue, and coffee donated by Starbucks, and fire truck tours provided by St. Catharines Fire and Emergency Services will be offered to children.

McIntyre said need for assistance has increased dramatically since the COVID-19 pandemic. “Many more people are becoming homeless and depending on services such as us,” she said.

“Luxuries such as hygiene items just aren’t in the budget.”

In a press release from Start Me Up Niagara, its executive director Laura Dumas said personal hygiene items help to provide dignity and respect to people who have no other option than facing homelessness or financial difficulties.

“Access to these essential items helps prevent illness, boosts self-esteem and enables individuals to participate more fully in their goals, work, school and social activities. For those facing financial hardship, it alleviates the crucial burden, allowing them to allocate limited resources to other pressing needs.”

McIntyre said all donations, no matter the size, are important.

People who cannot make it to Fairview Mall during the event can drop off donations at 203 Church St. Tuesday and Friday 10 a.m. to noon, and Sunday noon to 2 p.m.
